The Founders

February is the birthday month for our founders, Nancy and Edward Roberts. Nancy and Ed first started STOPP (Society To Oppose Phosphorus Pollution) in 1975 to fight longstanding phosphorus pollution from the City of Brighton Waste Water Treatment plant (via S. Ore Creek). STOPP transitioned into OLPA (Ore Lake Preservation Association) in 1990.

Nancy, and many other Ore Lake residents joined STOPP. They spent countless hours battling to get a new Brighton waste water treatment plant and lake-wide sewer system built to address the phosphorus pollution that was so seriously harming Ore Lake. Nancy’s dream was to keep Ore Lake a beautiful and pristine lake - for her children, grandchildren, and you.

However, pounds and pounds of phosphorus have been dumped into Ore Lake over the past years. We have a phosphorus-rich sediment that continues to cause water quality concerns. Ore Lake cannot tolerate any more phosphorus pollution. We must be vigilant and continue to monitor the Brighton Waste Water Facility and demand DEQ (EGLE) Permit limits that are safe for Ore Lake.

Now, we must carry on and be the advocates for this beautiful natural resource, Ore Lake.
